Biography
Over the years Dr. Islam has raised more than two million RMB in research grants, convening academic conference grants, and fellowships. He has published one monograph: Chinese and Indian Medicine Today: Branding Asia by Springer (2017), and four edited books: Public Health Challenges in Contemporary China: An Interdisciplinary Perspective by Springer (2016), Silk Road to Belt Road: Reinventing the Past and Shaping the Future by Springer (2019), Chinese Medicine and Transnational Transition during the Modern Era by Palgrave Macmillan (2021), and Bangladesh-China Connectivity: History, Trade and Diplomacy, and Society by Springer (2024). His research has been cited more than three hundred times and featured in many national and International news outlets including Ren Min (2023), Asia Pacific Business Review (2020), and South China Morning Post (2018). His edited volume has been translated into Chinese under the title 从丝绸之路到“一带一路”: 重塑过去,共创未来 by the Research Institute of Languages and Cultures, Hunan Normal University, and Published by Hunan Ren Min Press (2023). His articles have been published in many SSCI-Q1&Q2 journals, including Current Sociology, Health Sociology Review, Social Theory & Health, and the Asian Journal of Social Science. He is a member of the editorial board of Health Sociology Review. Dr. Islam has designed the course curriculum/syllabi and taught various major required courses, foundation courses, interdisciplinary courses, capstone courses, and free elective courses attended by nearly five thousand students. Dr. Islam has held visiting positions at the University of Sydney, Australia (2024); the University of British Columbia, Canada (2016); the University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong SAR (2008-11); and Ateneo de Manila University, The Philippines (2003). He has received the prestigious German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Fellowship, The United Nations University (UNU), Japan Fellowship; and The University of Hong Kong Postgraduate Studentship. Dr. Islam has been honored as Guangdong Provincial High-Level Talent (China since 2019), and Global Talent (Australia since 2021).
